Blog 2: “Moms and Tiaras”

For many years now, YouTube has provided individuals with the opportunity for creative expression, especially through remixed videos. The remix I chose combines selected clips from the TLC show “Toddlers and Tiaras.” All footage of the toddlers was completely removed shifting the focus away from the children and onto their parents. By focussing all the attention onto the parents, a reimagined reality show called “Moms and Tiaras” is created. The questionable and sometimes deeply troubling behavior of the adults is seen clearly. It succeeds in making us aware of the parent’s disturbing parental ideals by building on the meaning of the reference. The remix is educational because it invites us to understand the links that are drawn and the meaning behind them.
